Expressions of Interest:

Chairperson and members of the
Northern Territory Planning Commission

The Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment has invited Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified individuals wishing to be appointed as either chairperson or a member of the NT Planning Commission.

One chairperson and up to five (5) members are sought.

As a member of the Northern Territory Planning Commission, you will have an opportunity to shape how the Territory develops. Working collaboratively with other board members and a team of planning professionals and technical specialists, you’ll help guide responses to the Territory’s unique planning challenges and opportunities. The role offers a chance to contribute to the Territory’s long-term sustainability and liveability.

A broad range of professional and community perspectives is essential to the Commission’s work, and diversity is strongly encouraged.

Conditions of appointment, including an initial term of up to two years, will be negotiated with the successful candidate(s).

The selection criteria below must be addressed in your expression of interest.

Aboriginal people who have knowledge and experience in key areas needed on the Planning Commission are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to apply

To express your interest in becoming a member or chairperson of the NT Planning Commission, you will need to provide:

1. a statement of no more than three pages in length addressing how you meet the selection criteria.

2. a curriculum vitae (maximum three pages in length) that outlines:

  • your education and professional qualifications
  • career history and
  • relevant achievements and responsibilities.

Selection criteria

Interested people will need to demonstrate in their Expression of Interest:

  • strategic thinking and leadership that promotes the continuing growth and development of the Northern Territory consistent with good planning principles;
  • a proven capacity to quickly master complex ideas and communicate these effectively to a wide range of audiences;
  • high level interdisciplinary and analytical skills to identify key issues and make effective decisions on complex planning issues;
  • knowledge of community engagement principles and demonstrated interpersonal skills to administer and strengthen such processes;
  • well-developed political and organisational awareness to make sound and balanced judgements; and
  • a significant ability to understand different perspectives and aspirations across all levels of society, ages and cultures.

Expertise in disciplines relating to land use planning, community planning or service delivery is highly desirable. This could include fields such as:

  • land use planning and development
  • engineering
  • environmental science
  • surveying
  • spatial science
  • architecture
  • land valuation
  • urban design
  • economics
  • demography
  • community engagement and consultation
  • social policy
  • community service delivery.

Additional requirements for chairperson

The chairperson leads the Planning Commission and facilitates the proper consideration of all matters brought to the Commission.

People expressing an interest in the position of chairperson will be required, in addition to the above, to demonstrate in their Expression of Interest an ability to:

  • provide leadership.
  • facilitate meetings to promote constructive, respectful and expeditious discussions.
  • articulate a clear direction and vision for an organisation.
  • be an official spokesperson and present to the public and media.
